2019 Cadillac XT4 Steps It Up in Space, Tech | First Drive | Edmunds

The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is a new entry in the hottest segment right now: entry-level luxury SUVs. A lot of brand-new or fully redesigned competitors are crowding the market, but Cadillac is betting that a little extra interior space and a lot of technology features will help the XT4 stand out. Edmunds staff writer Will Kaufman traveled to the outskirts of Seattle to jump behind the wheel of the XT4 and get the measure of this not-so-small small crossover. Find out what we think of the 2019 Cadillac XT4 in our Edmunds First Drive.

Q: What are the 2019 Cadillac XT4’s competitors?
A: The Cadillac XT4 is meant to compete with vehicles such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and BMW X2, Lexus UX and Volvo XC40. It’s slightly larger than these small SUVs, although not as large as the Audi Q5 or the BMW X3. Cadillac is betting that some buyers will appreciate an entry-level luxury SUV that’s slightly larger than its diminutive competition.

Q: Is the 2019 Cadillac XT4 just a Chevrolet Traverse with a different face?
A: General Motors has done a lot of work to avoid merely badge-engineering an existing product. The XT4’s platform is new and unique to the XT4. The XT4 also comes in about 2 inches shorter than the Traverse. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine has been thoroughly reworked by Cadillac, as has the nine-speed automatic transmission. Everything from the seating position to the driving experience to the technology features feels distinct as well.

Q: How much horsepower does the 2019 Cadillac XT4 have?
A: The Cadillac XT4 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Q: What is the 2019 Cadillac XT4’s fuel economy?
A: The EPA rated the front-wheel-drive XT4 at 24 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway).

Q: Does the 2019 Cadillac XT4 have all-wheel drive?
A: A twin-clutch AWD system is available as an optional extra on the Cadillac XT4. This system is able to disengage the rear wheels fully to improve fuel economy.

Q: How much does the 2019 Cadillac XT4 cost?
A: The Cadillac XT4 starts at $35,790 with destination and handling fees.

55k for a fully loaded one ? I would rather take RDX for 47K or Q5 for 53k.

Gear One says:

I’ve always loved the Cadillac and to see this shows the brand may be in the right direction.

Blake Swan says:

Too little, too late. $55k for those plastics? The center lcd display looks like an iPad in an Outterbox Case. Interior is bad. $2.5k for AWD when it’s standard on the XC40. Pass. Volvo XC40 over this dud all day

These new caddies look good on the outside but when I’m in one it feels like I’m driving something less prestigious.

Cadillac has really been frustrating me with their products lately. Like Cadillac is no doubt and great brand and they have a long history of being an upscale luxury automaker but I feel cadillac just lacks the detail and the premium feel of thos who buy BMW’s or Mercedes. Like I wish the interior of Cadillac didn’t look like just another GM product. I wish the car had knurled vents and buttons, and ceramic buttons and had quilted leather. It just makes the car look alot nicer then it is and I really feel like Genesis is the luxury car to beat nowadays that isnt a german made car

Sounds like it sucks, I’d take Q5 or the xc40

Dwight Looi says:

237hp / 258 lb-ft is SUPER UNDERWHELMING. This is especially so given that this is a clean sheet 4-pot turbo with 3-stage cam switching and Dual VVT. It doesn’t really matter if the 258 lb-ft is reached at 1,500 rpm. Cadillac had the opportunity to build the world’s best 4-cylinder engine. They know how to do it. They choose to build an underwhelming engine. How sad.

Here’s what a proper “Premium” 4-cylinder from GM can and should like. #1 Cam Switching between Atkinson, low lift and high lift lobes. #2 Direct and Port injection for refinement at idle and low load cruise, while keeping carbon from fouling the intakes. #3 Air-to-water intercooler and individual throttle butterflies for minimum pressurized volume and maximum responsiveness. #4 Twin Scroll Turbo with Titanium Aluminide turbine for maximum response (I suggest Honeywell G25-550DT) #5 Head integrated, water cooled, exhaust collector for quick warmup and ET control #6 Titanium connecting rods, forged steel crank and hypereutetic pistons for strength. #6 Vacuum operated, electronically controlled wastegate #7 Dual Harmonic balancers for smoothness. #8 BOV not Bypass valve; no need to recirculate heated air back into the turbo inlet. How much power? How about 360 bhp @ 6,600~7,000 rpm / 300 lb-ft @ 2000~6000 rpm on 20 psi of boost and 9.8:1 static compression.

RayJ-HT says:

Dude your bias is so transparent! You just complain constantly and I’ve been in a GLA and it is cheap as hell this looks way better. Just say I have a GM bias and move on.
