2018 Mazda CX-5 – Preview, Pricing, Release Date
The Mazda CX-5 is slated to receive some subtle yet important updates for the 2018 model year. The biggest changes involve more standard safety equipment and the introduction of cylinder deactivation technology for better fuel economy.
In terms of its exterior, no major changes are coming. Expect to see the same chiseled features and dynamic sport mesh grille introduced during the vehicle’s redesign earlier this year. For 2018, LED lights will now be standard up front and in back. As before, 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard on entry-level Sport models.
Inside, the updated Sport trim benefits from the addition of a leather steering wheel and shift knob. Other key features include cloth seats and a 7-inch touchscreen audio system. The Touring gets you leatherette seats and access to a moonroof and 10-speaker Bose audio system plus navigation with the Preferred Package. To get leather seats, shoppers will have to upgrade to the Grand Touring.
Under the hood, all versions of the CX-5 will continue to come with a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV engine rated at 187 hp with 186 lb-ft of torque. As before, a 6-speed automatic transmission is standard. The key difference will be the use of cylinder deactivation technology, which can shut down 2 of the vehicle’s 4 cylinders during cruising to improve fuel efficiency.
At the moment, there are no indications that Mazda intends to add a more powerful engine to the lineup. In contrast, the automaker has already revealed that the Mazda6 sedan will soon gain the 2.5-liter turbo from the larger CX-9 crossover rated at 227 hp with 310 lb-ft. Although some buyers have been clamoring for a more potent alternative, this doesn’t appear to be in the cards.
