Tesla’s new 2170 battery cell

As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3.
The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been boasting about the new cell over the past few month. He said that it’s the “highest energy density cell in the world and also the cheapest”.

PS: It is NOT 2170 it is 21700. 18650 = 18mm x 65mm and the last 0 means round style. So 21700 = 21mm x 70mm and the last 0 again meaning round style. Lastly, they have been on the market for awhile now as most Vapor / e-cig users can attest. 18650 has been the industry standard for a long time. 20700 & 21700 are beginning to gain popularity due to their ability to handle higher Amperage / Storage. Guess they are just new to Tesla at this point.

Wouldn’t you agree it’s stupid to start manufacture of few millimeters bigger cell when the 18650 is just becoming to its popularity in flashlights and every kind of products such as powerdrill batteries and so on.
They would have significant price advantage with the 18650 battery cell, which is 10€ a piece in local store 2017.
If tesla would understand about the weight of the battery they would make the cell much bigger. Tho the collision safety with every 2170 fused with those separate hair light fuses must be good >> if << they rip of in crash.
